Coldplay launches fresh chart assault with fifth album

LONDON (Reuters) - You may not understand the title of Coldplay's new album let alone be able to pronounce it, but "MyloXyloto" is a name music fans may have to get used to as the group launches a fresh assault on the world's charts.
The English quartet's fifth studio album hits shelves in Britain on Monday and the United States on Tuesday, and early critical response is mostly positive for a record aided and "enoxified" by Brian Eno.
Judging by comments made during a blitz of interviews to publicize the album, Coldplay could do with a little love, something that might seem strange given their success.
Their last record, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," was released in 2008 and went on to become that calendar year's top-selling album at 6.8 million copies.
The one before that, "X & Y," claimed the same honor in 2005, shifting 8.3 million copies globally.
They are one of the world's biggest bands, have multiple Grammys and album sales of around 50 million to their name.
Yet that has not shielded the unusually unassuming rock stars from criticism that tends to focus on their clean-cut "middle class" image and music that naysayers label as "bland" and "Radiohead-lite."
Guitarist Joe Satriani also sued the band, alleging that their chart-topping and award-winning "Viva La Vida" contained elements of his "If I Could Fly." The two sides reportedly settled out of court in late 2009.
"We got to a very low place on the last record where we felt not very popular," lead singer Chris Martin told the Sun tabloid.
"But it was refreshing as it made us start from scratch. A clean slate. So many people had made up their minds about us already that we had nothing to lose."
YOUNG COMPETITION
That sense of defiance came with a realization that, in order to rule the charts again, Coldplay are not up against "stadium bands" like, say, U2 but teen sensation Justin Bieber and English singing sensation Adele.
"Now we have Justin Bieber and Adele to compete with and they're a lot younger," 34-year-old Martin, who is married to Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow, said in a recent interview.
"We have to have the energy to put as much effort into our work as they do. If it's over, it's over and I can live with that. The most important thing always is to proceed as if every album is the last and not expect anything more."
Early reviews of Mylo Xyloto have been generally positive, with critics remarking that, while offering some fresh twists, the sound is essentially the Coldplay of old.
"It's a surging, chiming, upbeat epic, almost thunderously enthusiastic," wrote Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph in a four-star review.
He went on to call the album "irresistible," but voiced reservations, shared by Alexis Petridis of the Guardian in a three-star review, about the lack of depth in lyrics and music.
"Questioned about the title, Martin has insisted 'it doesn't have any meaning'," said McCormick. "His defiant inarticulacy feeds the notion that Coldplay are a pop group in rock clothing."
Rolling Stone magazine's Josh Eells gave the record three-and-a-half stars, commenting: "On Mylo Xyloto, the choruses are bigger, the textures grander, the optimism more optimistic. It's a bear-hug record for a bear-market world."
Martin, along with bandmates Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums), have produced a concept album loosely based on a love story set in a dystopian world.
In June, Coldplay released its first single "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" followed by "Paradise" in September.
Among the highlights of the 14-track album are "Princess of China," featuring Rihanna on vocals, and "Charlie Brown," which Billboard magazine called the record's best song.
Coldplay is signed to EMI Group Ltd.

Lady Gaga 'gets serious with new man'

Lady Gaga is getting very serious with her new love, according to reports.
The 25-year-old singer began dating Taylor Kinney earlier this year and the pair's romance seems to be progressing quickly.
Friends of the star say she 'has never been happier' but are concerned that she might be headed for heartbreak. Taylor dumped his long-time girlfriend for Gaga earlier this summer after they met on the set of her Yoü and I video.

Gaga believes that 'he's fallen in love with the real her, unlike her last boyfriend Lüc Carl, who just liked the idea of having a famous girlfriend,' an insider told In Touch.
The singer is said to be so into Taylor that she has given him the keys to her homes in Los Angeles and New York. The pair reportedly want to spend as much time together as possible.
'They're planning a beach getaway at New Year's,' the source said. 'She is on cloud nine right now.'
But a friend of the star has warned that Gaga falls in love hard and they don't want her to make the same mistakes again.
'Right now, she thinks Taylor is 'the one,' but she thought that of Lüc too, and it took her a long time to recover,' the source continued.
'She spent many nights crying over Lüc, drinking and not eating.'

Jackson's death 'not caused by self-injection'

The possibility that Michael Jackson injected himself with a fatal dose of Propofol is highly 'unlikely', a court heard Thursday.
The final witness for the prosecution in the trial against Dr. Conrad Murray for Jackson's involuntary manslaughter concluded his testimony yesterday.
The singer died in June 2009 from what coroners ruled to be acute Propofol intoxication. Murray has denied administering the fatal shot of the drug to Jackson, alleging that the singer may have injected himself with the lethal dose.
Murray's defence also claims that Jackson may have died not from the Propofol, but the excess of the sedative Lorezapam that was also found in his system at the singer's time of death.

Dr. Steven Shafer, who wrote the packaging insert for the powerful anaesthetic Propofol, ruled out the defence's assertion. He said that 'the possibility of a direct self-injection [of Propofol by Jackson] seems extremely unlikely' since Murray claimed he stepped out of the bedroom for only a few minutes.
Shafer also discounted claims that Jackson died from swallowing eight tablets of Lorazepam behind Murray's back. The amount of Lorazepam found in autopsy reports was simply too 'trivial' to lead to death.

Shafer said that Murray may have given Jackson more Propofol than was initially disclosed. The anaesthesiologist told jurors that Jackson had 25 additional milligrams of the drug in his system than the amount Murray reported to the police in June 2009.
Shafer spent much of the rest of his testimony outlining the proper medical administration of Propofol. He also demonstrated how he believed Murray gave Jackson the drug improperly the night of the singer's demise.
During this demonstration Shafer said Murray did not use an automated pump an action that caused the Propofol IV bag to drip a dangerously fast rate.

The defence will call its first witnesses today with an aim to wrap up proceedings by the middle of next week. Murray's legal team plans to call 15 witnesses, including an independent toxicologist who is expected to support their self-inflicted overdose theory.
Murray can face up to four years of prison and the revocation of his medical licence if found guilty.

Nicole Scherzinger 'ends romance'

Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton have reportedly ended their four-year relationship.
The pair have called time on their high-profile romance after realising their conflicting schedules do not allow them to spend any time together.
Nicole and racing driver Lewis split in January this year, citing work issues as the reason. However, sources close to pair say this time the break-up is final.
"Nicole and Lewis have tried to make it work but realised it's just not happening so have called it a day once and for all,' a friend told British newspaper The Sun.
"They've spoken at length about it but agreed there's no point as they never see each other. They spend their whole time on opposite sides of the world.'
Nicole has had a particularly busy year.
The 33-year-old beauty has released and promoted her debut solo album Killer Love, after parting ways with the Pussycat Dolls.
She has landed a lucrative role as a judge on the US version of The X Factor. Nicole also filmed her part in Men In Black III.
Meanwhile, Formula One driver Lewis has been touring with his team McLaren.
Nicole is understandably upset about the situation.
"Although they came to an amicable decision, Nicole is actually devastated about it. She thought Lewis was the one,' the source explained.
'They still genuinely care for each other but they've decided to be adult about it and go it alone. There are no hard feelings."
An insider confirmed last night to another newspaper that Lewis and Nicole have been having problems for the past six weeks. The source told British publication The Mirror that the pair were becoming increasingly frustrated by their separate lives.
'ncreasingly hectic schedules this year have meant limited face-to-face time. They've probably spent more time on the phone or on Skype than they have in person,' the source explained.
'Sadly, Nicole's job on X Factor USA ' which, professionally, has been an unmitigated success ' appears to have come at the cost of her relationship. Lewis found their intense working relationship hard to contend with.
'This, plus Lewis's crazy international jet-set lifestyle, put immeasurable strain on the pair.'
The pair met at the MTV Awards in Munich in 2007.
